I learn something new every day… Todays lesson: Visibility with the sun at your back is considerably better than looking into the sun. A huge thank you to Jeff from the Seattle Aquarium for helping me instal 2 secchi disks on pilings at a regularly dove dive site so that it is easy to take readings 🙂 Read more →

A day on the river in pictures….
Duckboats, Secchi disks and PB&J
I’m so looking forward to tomorrow! Neal Chism, the kind gentleman who has been making secchi disks for our project and single handedly cleaning up the Duwamish waterway, has invited me out for a lunch time trash tour and to get a look at one of the bigger CSO outflows. This is the outflow that gets its runoff from literally… Read more →
First try… Project Secchi disk!
Trying out equipment for a data logging project… Our long term goals will to be measure visibility in puget sound over a three year period at a handful of secchi disk stations. We have been getting our ducks in a row for the past year and a half to make this happen and it is very exciting to see it start coming to fruition!
As always, we know that secchi disk readings are subjective, but we hope to at least get a more realistic idea of the trends not only seasonal, but how storm drain outflow affects water turbidity (quality?) at nearby dive sites in puget sound. Data that will be collected, depth, time, ambient light, temperature, secchi disk distance, general conditions topside.
We hope to have a mobile friendly data entry site in place for all divers interested in participating in place soon.
The more you learn, the less you know
It’s interesting, i’ve learned that CSO’s in reality kind of get a bit of a bad rap (thanks to folks who know a lot more about this stuff than me), at least in our area. If they are done correctly (AKA big enough storage/catch tanks) they can actually direct the storm water via controlled release to the treatment facility. The… Read more →
Welcome!
If the Ocean is a reflection of us, as humanity, are we happy with what we see? I invite you to follow me beneath the looking glass… These will be non-scientific observations of a wild, wonderful world that is being dramatically altered by our every day choices. every time you look in the mirror, ask yourself, were as many of… Read more →
Ocean Debris
one of the things i’m working on is called “beneath the looking glass project”. Part of what i’m trying to show IS indeed the amazingly beautiful life growing on human trash. The site that a recent video was taken at is called “the Alki Junkyard” and as a diver it becomes clear that there is a difference between ‘habitat’… Read more →
